It is no secret that detectives have a passion for public service, and Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) detective David Roth is taking this to a new level. This 22-year IMPD veteran is embarking on a new mission: he is planning to walk 3,000 miles to raise money for a retreat house for veterans and their families.

As chairman of the board for Helping Hands for Freedom, Roth has been intimately involved in efforts to support veterans. This nationwide organization helps veterans throughout the country with a number of programs and fundraising to help these heroes.
Roth is particularly concerned about veterans who may be suffering from PTSD or other serious issues. His goal is to raise $3 million to construct the retreat house for veterans that will help these former servicemen and women spend time with their families.
Part of his motivation is Roth’s relationship with his stepson who is about to deployed for his fifth time. Roth appreciates the strain this can cause on families, since his stepson has four young children who have needed reintroduction to their father several times.
He is still in the beginning stages of preparing for his cross-country walk and is training with Lamon Brewster for the event. Brewster is a local former heavyweight boxing champion. Roth has been working out several times a week for the past several months to begin getting in shape for his feat.
He plans on starting his walk called Route for the Brave in Atlantic City, New Jersey and following US Route 40 to San Francisco. Roth plans to begin on April 26, 2016 and complete this walk by that August.
